Safety Alert: Toxicity Risk Prompts Urgent Warning on Water Beads

In a recent warning, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has alerted consumers to the immediate dangers posed by Jangostor Large Water Beads, citing the product’s violation of the Federal Hazardous Substances Act due to high levels of acrylamide. This toxic substance can lead to serious health risks if ingested, particularly in children. The urgency of the warning is underscored by reports of two young children who needed surgical intervention to remove the beads after ingestion. These beads, designed to expand in water, can cause severe internal issues, including discomfort, vomiting, dehydration, and potentially life-threatening intestinal blockages.

Despite the severity of these risks, Jangostor, the company based in China that manufactures these water beads, has not initiated an acceptable recall, leaving consumers at risk. The CPSC advises consumers to immediately cease using these beads and dispose of them safely. The beads have been available for purchase on from March 2017 through November 2023, coming in two sizes and a variety of colors. The CPSC is also encouraging consumers to report any incidents involving injury or defects related to these products on their website, aiming to prevent further harm.
